Screencasting Products

Information

This information is current as of the date of this post (to the best of my knowledge). I am sure other products exist.
What is screen capture? An image of your entire screen or a portion of your screen.
What is a screencast? A recording of what is happening on your screen, or a portion of your screen with audio (optional) and in some cases a webcam (optional).

Products

TechSmith
*Snagit  - Screen Capture and Screen Recorder
*Camtasia Studio - Screen Recorder and Video Editor (not free)
Relay - Lecture Capture Solution (not free)
*Jing and Jing Pro are not supported, not recommended
TechSmith online storage (screencast.com) recently purged videos that had not been viewed in the past 12 months.

Screencastomatic
The Solo Deluxe version allows editing ($18 per year). For a quick look at the editing tools, watch this clip.

Screencastify
*This tool is a Chrome extension that will save your video into a Google Drive folder. The free "Light Weight" version does not support editing. However, it has some good options (audio, webcam). The Premium version is $24 per year.

Google Drive is free cloud storage similar to Box and Dropbox. You do not need a gmail account to have a Drive account, but folks typically do. I suggest watching a Lynda course on this product.

Adobe Captivate
Advanced cloud based screen capture program. The 2019 version supports 360 and VR support. I believe faculty have free access to the Adobe Suite. This is way beyond what I need at this time.

iMove
Apple product (free)

Quicktime
Apple product - not supported, not recommended

*Skype, WebEx, GoToMeeting, GotoTraining, etc. can record sessions.

File Formats
MP4, MP3, AVI, MPG, FLV, 3GP, WMV (Windows Media Video)
